Ganesh Utsav: the creative idols and inspirations

The festival of joy that is celebrated with community and household celebrations in Indore is approaching and preparing for the same, residents are looking for the blissful Ganesha to be installed in their homes for the coming 11-day Ganesha Utsav from September 2. Bringing unique designs of Ganesha in multiple styles and colours, most people are opting for eco-friendly idols. While eco-friendly idols are available in various attractive colours and prices, large sized idols of 5 feet and above are still prepared with plaster of paris (POP) and available in the market. Hence, various pandals in the city might settle for POP idols. Though many pandal coordinators claim to have eco-friendly Ganesha idols every year, it seems less likely because eco-friendly Ganesha idols are rarely found in Indore’s market in large sizes. Also, it is difficult to bring Ganesha from a longer distance, because they tend to crack and break lacking the strength of POP. To check the same, pollution cont...

Tempting to opt for basic, but parents & schools push for Standard version of Math CBSE class X

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) new rule giving an easier option of attempting mathematics examination to students attempting class X board is tempting, but mostly seen as risky considering limitations in higher classes by parents and schools in Indore. Parents are nudging students to stick with ‘standard’ version of Mathematics to keep their options open, while schools are doing their part and providing requisite information and warning about limitations after going for the ‘basic’ version. Overall, there is a delicate push for most students to stick with the original version for keeping their options open in class XI. Those opting for basic version of the math exam won’t be eligible to pursue the subject in class XI, which ultimately rules out admission in engineering field. Though other fields are not ruled out, students tend to get a benefit in other entrance examination having Quantitative Aptitude section by having a better base in class X boards. Manoj Bajpai, f...

Broken mollards, lack of railings in BRTS corridor resulting in collision every day

With broken railings and mollards, two-wheelers are freely passing through the BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) are inviting higher number of accidents with ibus and other commuters in mixed traffic lanes. Despite having quick maintenance policy, Atal Indore City Transport Service Limited (AiCTSL) has failed to repair broken mollards and railings on many squares and places throughout the BRTS corridor. Two major points where the condition has been worsening over the last month is Shalimar township bus stop and Bhawarkua bus stop. With no mollards at Shalimar bus stop, about 10 two-wheelers pass through the BRTS corridor every minute. With no square and closed corridor, mixed traffic in the lane does not expect two-wheelers coming from the opening on corridor and avert collision in the last second. Minor collision have become common here every day, especially for those drivers, who are not accustomed to unexpected two-wheelers jumping from BRTS corridor. Residents in the area claim t...

Misconceptions impede a mother from breastfeeding, Dr Neerja Pauranik

Every mother can feed the child, but misconceptions about not producing enough milk, often result in switching to easy alternative feeding options. This was shared by gynaecologist Dr Neerja Pauranik in her talk on ‘Awareness about Breastfeeding’ at Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science on Thursday. “A baby is born with a stomach the size of a marble, imagine the amount of milk required to fill a marble sized stomach, it is not much,” Neerja said. The mother produces enough milk at a time to fill baby’s stomach, but family members’ specifically senior women get anxious and claim that it is not enough. “A woman’s body acts according to a baby’s demand and produces enough to provide the right amount of nutrition, but when people claim it is not enough, then baby is given alternative feeds,” Neerja said. Alternative feed is easier for baby and often sends the baby into comfortable sleep. “The easy feed option changes the physiology of the baby and mother red...
