Indore Students’ Panic Eases After CBSE Clarifies ‘Rickroll’ QR Code Confusion
By TINA KHATRI | INDORE | March 10, 2026
Indore students attempting CBSE Class 12 finally breathed a sigh of relief as the board on Tuesday reassured students that the Mathematics board exam question papers are genuine.
CBSE assured that their security has not been compromised, following viral social media posts claiming that a QR code printed on the paper redirected users to a music video. The clarification came a day after the March 9 examination, when students in Indore were left puzzled by screenshots circulating online suggesting that scanning the QR code led to the song "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley — a well-known internet prank called “rickrolling”.
The Board's Stance
In a statement, CBSE said board exam papers carry several security features, including QR codes that help verify the authenticity of the document if any breach is suspected.
“The question papers are genuine. The security of the question papers remains uncompromised. Scanning a QR code appeared to open a YouTube video in only a few instances.”
Despite the official word, the rumors spread rapidly across WhatsApp and Instagram groups. Aditya Sharma, a Class 12 student, noted that many classmates wondered if the paper had been tampered with or if a technical glitch had occurred.
Student Fact-Check
Several students who scanned the code on their own papers found far less exciting results. Kunal Verma, another Class 12 student, confirmed that for most, the code was simply a set of identification markers.
- ✔️ Authenticity: Codes only showed letters identifying the paper set.
- ✔️ Security: No evidence of paper leakage or systemic tampering.
- ✔️ Resolution: Concern has been taken seriously by CBSE to prevent future speculation.
While the board reiterates that the process remains secure, the viral "rickroll" episode added an unexpected layer of stress to an already high-pressure board exam season for Indore’s students.
