Janak Palta McGilligan celebrates 78th birthday with tree plantation

Indore — Padma Shri Janak Palta McGilligan marked her 78th birthday by planting 78 belpatra trees on Dutani Hill near Sanawadiya village. The plantation drive was organised by the Jimmy and Janak McGilligan Foundation for Sustainable Development and included participation from environmentalists, forest officials, local residents and members of the Baha’i community.

Addressing the gathering, Janak Palta McGilligan said, Serving nature is true service to humanity. It is our duty to leave a green legacy for future generations.

The programme began with the blowing of a conch by cardiologist Bharat Rawat, followed by prayers from Janak Palta McGilligan, Lalita Sharma, Aryama Sanyal, Ajay Tipaniya and music guru Gautam Kale. District forest officer Lal Sudhakar and forest ranger Sangeeta Thakur also attended, along with trustees Virendra Goyal and Anuradha Dubey.

Environmental supporter Ambrish Kela said that consistent care ensures the survival of the saplings, while local representative Ravi Rawalia and deputy sarpanch Prakash Rawalia confirmed community support for maintenance. A total of 86 participants planted 78 saplings, with around 100 people attending the programme.

McGilligan, the organiser of the programme, said the annual plantation initiative has become a tradition to promote environmental responsibility, green awareness and sustainable development in the region. Volunteers and foundation members coordinated logistics, refreshments and sapling care. Participants pledged to continue nurturing the trees.

Janak Palta McGilligan left her professional career in Chandigarh to establish a training institute for tribal women in Indore. Along with her late husband, Jimmy McGilligan, she developed the Barli Development Institute for Rural Women campus into a sustainable green environment. Since 2011, she has lived in Sanawadiya village, planting trees annually as part of her environmental work.

She is an inspirational woman who has dedicated her life to education, women’s empowerment, and environmental conservation. Her work has encouraged thousands of young women to pursue education and self-reliance, while her consistent tree planting initiatives have strengthened community awareness about sustainability and climate action. Known for her humility, perseverance, and commitment to service, Janak Palta McGilligan continues to serve as a role model for future generations, demonstrating that individual action can create lasting positive change in society and the environment.
