Over 12 Million Indians Living with Glaucoma, Majority Unaware

By TINA KHATRI | INDORE | March 14, 2026

With glaucoma emerging as one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, health experts warn that a large number of patients remain unaware of the disease until significant vision loss has already occurred.

Globally, more than 80 million people are living with glaucoma, and the number is projected to cross 110 million by 2040. In India alone, nearly 12 million people are affected, and experts estimate that over 70–80 percent of cases remain undiagnosed due to the absence of early symptoms.

The "Silent Thief of Sight"

To raise awareness, Create Stories NGO organised an eye-care awareness programme titled “Living With Glaucoma” during World Glaucoma Week in Indore. The session focused on educating people above 40, patients, and their families about early detection and management.

“Glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can definitely be controlled. With timely diagnosis, regular follow-ups and proper use of prescribed eye drops, patients can preserve their vision for a lifetime.”
— Dr. Amit Solanki, Ophthalmologist

Dr. Solanki emphasized that regular check-ups are vital, especially for diabetic and hypertensive patients or those with a family history of the condition. More than 90 patients and family members attended the interactive session to address common myths and medication adherence.

Tips to Prevent Glaucoma-Related Vision Loss

  • Get regular eye check-ups after 40.
  • Control diabetes and blood pressure.
  • Use prescribed eye drops regularly.
  • Do not miss follow-up visits.
  • Seek medical advice for vision changes or eye pain.

Experts reiterated that early screening remains the most effective tool to prevent irreversible blindness. People in high-risk groups are urged to undergo regular comprehensive eye examinations.
