Holy Thursday Observed with Foot Washing Ceremony in Indore Churches
The Catholic community in Indore observed Holy Thursday with solemn religious ceremonies and heartfelt prayer services commemorating two major events from the life of Jesus Christ.
According to Christian tradition, Holy Thursday marks the day of the Last Supper, when Jesus shared a final meal with his twelve disciples and instituted the Holy Eucharist. It is also the day when Jesus, setting an example of humility and service, washed the feet of his disciples, a gesture still observed symbolically in Catholic churches worldwide.
As part of this tradition, special services were held at all Catholic churches in Indore at 6:30 PM. At Holy Family Church, Pipliyakumar, Bishop Dr Thomas Macwan, of the Indore Catholic Diocese, washed the feet of twelve parishioners, demonstrating Christ’s call to serve others selflessly.
In his sermon, Bishop Macwan emphasized, “Washing another’s feet is the greatest sign of humility. Through this act, we show respect to even the least among us. No matter how gifted a person may be, without humility, those qualities lose their shine. Therefore, we must strive to be humble in heart and eager to serve others.”
Holy Thursday also marks the beginning of the Paschal Triduum, the three holiest days in the Catholic calendar: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. These days commemorate Jesus’s suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection – the core of Christian belief.
On Good Friday (April 18), the Way of the Cross devotion will begin at 9:00 AM at the Our Lady’s Grotto, Palasia. All Catholic churches across Indore will hold their own Way of the Cross between 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Additionally, live reenactments of the Passion of Christ will take place at Red Church, Holy Spirit Church, Palda, and Infant Jesus Church, Chhota Bangarda.
The live Passion procession at Red Church will begin at 1:30 PM from the Sat Prachar Press campus.
