Forest workers launched a mass protest against compensation and job to family in Lateri incident and handed over their guns to forest minister Vijay Shah on Tuesday.
There was a fierce protest in the forest department regarding the announcement of Rs 20 lakh compensation and government job to the relatives of the accused who died in the Lateri incident. The government recently announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakhs to the family of deceased and Rs 5 lakhs each to those injured in the incident.
On Tuesday, during the visit of the minister, Forest Ranger, Deputy Ranger and Forest Guard deposited their weapons and raised a stern opposition in front of the minister. In other parts of the state, forest workers also deposited their weapons to the office.
The Forest Workers and Rangers Association handed over their guns to the Minister and said, “The forest workers may have weapons, but they have not been given any rights.”
The officials added that instead of protecting the forest, the government is encouraging female mafia, which is absolutely wrong. “FIRs are registered against the forest workers without any hesitation,” the association representatives said.
A similar case was recently registered in Choral range. In that, despite instructions from Ministry of Home Affairs, India, an FIR was registered against Choral deputy ranger at the complaint of a villager to stop encroachment eviction drive in the area.

In the matter, Shah talked about discussing the entire incident with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday. On the other hand, after persuading Forest Divisional Officer Narendra Pandawa, the forest workers decided to deposit guns in Indore Forest Division on Wednesday evening.
Ranger Ravikant Jain, PS Chauhan, Sachin Verma, Yogesh Yadav, District President Dinesh Sharma, officer Shyam Gohe and fifty other forest workers were present among those who protested.
The bullet hit by the deceased will be investigated
Forest Minister Shah finally spoke after Lateri incident and said, “A judicial inquiry would be conducted into the incident, Even the bullet that hit the deceased will be examined.” He added that examination of bullet will help in uncovering major details.
“We need to first establish whether the bullet was fired from the gun of the forest worker or was shot by other gang members. Only after that the Chief Minister will be asked to take action,” Shah said.
Will give the responsibility of security to the forest committee
In discussion with the forest workers, Shah said, “There is no need to be disappointed with the developments. I believe that the protection of the forest is not on the strength of guns.” He added that weapons are given only to scare criminals.
“But now the spirits of the criminals have become very high and this came fore in the Lateri incident,” Shah said. He added that new rules regarding the protection of the forest will be discussed with the Chief Minister on Wednesday.
“The rights of rangers and other forest workers will also be increased. They say that the security of an open forest cannot be ensured by relying on two thousand forest workers. Now the members of forest committees will be entrusted with the responsibility of security. An outline will be made regarding this,” Shah said.
