The accused were arrested in case of leopard poaching and hunting that was reported at Janapav in Indore Forest Division. The leopard’s nails and whiskers were missing.
Later, these were confiscated from the prime accused. CCF HS Mohanta said, “Hukum Babariya Bhuriya, aged 43 Years, is the prime accused as he was found in possession of leopard nails and whiskers.” Bhuriya is a resident of Badakua village, Tehsil Mhow, Indore .
“Bhuriya is the priest of the Panchmukhi Hanuman temple in Janpav,” Mohanta said. Another accused Santosh Badrilal Choudhury is from the same village and aged 25.
“Further a forest guard of the area along with two others are still in custody,” DFO Narendra Pandwa said. The forest guard allegedly knew about the incident and chances of the same, but did not inform the department.
Some villagers, who had gone to graze the goats in the forest, saw the carcass of the leopard and informed the forest department.
In the Janapav forest area, the carcass of a leopard was found in a suspicious condition. Three nails on his feet and whiskers were missing.
The skin of the leopard was intact. Seeing the dead body, forest officials have expressed fear of hunting.
During interrogation, it was found that a goat was been hunted in the area on Saturday. Forest officials estimated that the villagers beat the leopard to death.
The doctors reported that it was not a normal death. After the villagers informed and forest officials reported missing whiskers and nails, the officers immediately swung into action.
STSF was also informed and asked to remain on toes. With the help of a dog squad, STSF searched the entire area. The dogs found the nails and whiskers with the priest and helped in detecting the second accused as well.
According to the doctor who will do the post-mortem, the leopard had died three days ago. Forest Ranger PS Chauhan said that the age of the leopard was 7-8 years.
