The hunters of wild boar were considered as the main accused in the Nayapura leopard shooting, in which a hunter Mohan Dabi is absconding for six months. But the State Tiger Strike Force (STSF) has not shown interest in capturing him.

Due to the apathy of the authorities, the hunter has once again become active in the forest. He was seen meeting his family members by forest guards and locals. STSF is also aware of this.

Leopard was shot 42 times with shrapnel

On 10 July 2020, a leopard was shot in the Nayapura forest area of Indore range.

The adult leopard was rescued by forest officials saving the majestic wildcat from losing its life. A team led by forest ranger Suresh Barole reached Nayapura, Indore after hearing about a leopard in the area.

The leopard was found injured and bleeding from its mouth. Sharing details about the operation, Barole had said, “Wildlife volunteer Rohitansh Pandey and villagers informed us about the leopard around 1:00 am.”

It was later found that the leopard had 42 shrapnel in its skull and was mercilessly shot by a possible poacher.

The investigation and discrepancies

Indore Range and Ralamandal Sanctuary rescue team investigated the case for two months.

The statements of villagers including Bablu, Arjun, and Kailash were recorded. There was a huge difference in the statements of the suspects.

Not a single officer had provided complete information in the case. Hence, finally the case handed over to STSF in November 2020.

STSF failed to investigate too

For months, the STSF officials did not conduct the investigation in the right direction. Inquiries were made around the points of the old team.

Despite the passage of eight months, the investigation did not reach any conclusion.

In February-March 2021, advocate Abhijit Pandey complained to the Ministry of Forest and Environment, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau.

From here, information was also sought from the STSF headquarters regarding the matter.

The true accused?

According to the Call Detail Record (CDR), the mobile location of these accused was not found even once on July 10 around Nayapura forest area. While Ramesh has a house in a village adjoining Nayapura.

During the investigation, the gun and the remains of the pig were seized.

According to the sources, the STSF prepared the evidence. Also got the signatures of the accused were taken on plain paper. The statements are allegedly written by an officer from Bhopal.

Dabi visits family, STSF not willing to arrest

A team had also come from Bhopal to take remand of poachers, which was continuously interrogating them.

According to sources, the accused could not even tell about the incident of July 10 even once.

Despite this, the case of leopard was put on them.

Dabi's relatives were in contact with a deputy ranger from Bhopal. Several times in six months the villagers saw Dabi around the forest.

Despite being informed about this to the forest personnel of STSF and Indore range, the team did not attempt to find or arrest Dabi.

As per locals, he has also been meeting the family members. According to the villagers, Dabi comes to meet the family members in the evening hours.
