Madhya Pradesh: Night Safari in Ralamandal sanctuary is an invite to poachers and a threat to wild-life and biodiversity in Indore
Night Safari in Ralamandal sanctuary is an invite to poachers and a threat to wild-life and biodiversity. Stating this, a letter for reconsidering the proposed scheme for Night Safari and other proposed scheme in Ralamandal was sent to Chief Minister, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary Forest Department on Thursday.
The letter was written by legal activist Abhijeet Pandey, who is also a representative of Congress party.
He noted the plans about developing Ralamandal as a tourist spot and said, “The city expresses its gratitude to you for the efforts being made to promote the tourist place through such a scheme, but I request you to see that the Ralamandal Sanctuary is already well developed.”
However, it is not possible to have night safari here, the letter added. “According to the information received, night roaming is prohibited in the sanctuary, as any kind of activity during the night will not only cause trouble to the wildlife, but there is a period of night during which wildcats like leopard roam free in the sanctuary,” Pandey said.
He noted that leopards have been rising in and around Indore for decades and are active during the night. “In such a situation, by giving entry to people in the sanctuary at night, many cases of poaching of wildlife will come to the fore,” Pandey said.
He added that this proposal is unfair from the point of view of protection of wildlife. “Instead, I would like to draw your attention towards Choral range, where for highway construction the reserved forest land of Choral has also been taken under construction,” Pandey said.
He noted that this construction will result in chopping off many trees and loss of habitat for wildlife.
