From the life of Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, the great queen of Indore to Modern day woman, a short film 'KarmYogini' plays a reminder of essential lessons

In the land of Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, still many women and girls struggle to find their identity and achieve their dreams.

To remind Indoreans of our rich history and what led Indore to its glory, three female students of Daly College will play led roles under the guidance of school principal Neeraj K Bedhotiya in the short inspirational film.

Titled ‘KarmYogini’, the film focuses on life of Devi Ahilya and further discusses how a woman can achieve so much if supported like the little Ahilya was. The movie will have its premiere in the school auditorium on January 23.

Leading a change… the storyline

The story of the short film ‘KarmYogini’ begins by talking about challenges faced by women today. The struggles and obstacles built by society and hindrances created by closed-thinking.

The modern woman challenges these notions and attempts to find her way. In a back-flash to history, much like on the lines of famous bollywood movie ‘Rang De Basanti’, the life of little Ahilya is recalled.

From the little girl with lots of questions and a will to have equality to the one of the greatest rulers and our loved queen, Devi Ahilya’s life inspires the modern woman.

Inspired to counter the obstacles and take on challenges to achieve her dreams, KarmYogini, i.e. the modern day woman finally achieves ‘Entrepreneur of the year’ award and sets a new history.

Girls in lead, share their take

The three girls playing lead roles in the movie truly believe that women can lead change and even built India back into the ‘Golden Bird’ (Sone ki chidiya). The trio while playing their designated roles in the movie have not done an impeccable job, but also learned and felt inspired by Indore’s rich history and story of Devi Ahilya.

Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar

“Looking at open-mindedness and upliftment of the society, many historians have compared Maharani Ahilyabai’s reign to Akbar’s. Every woman in India can still do that. We need to remember that the power that lies in women of India.”

“Ahilyabai Holkar was such a great figure in the history of India that even the Britishers, travelers from all over the world admired her. Women today in India need the same freedom and support to take our country to new heights.”

Little Ahilya

“Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar is not just a pride of Marathas or the people of Indore. She is the pride of entire India who remembers her exemplary courage leading the people from the front. We need to remember the lessons she taught. Be open minded and treat girls same as boys, support them.”

Ira Lodhi

Trio remembered Ahilya as…

“For thirty years her reign of peace,

The land in blessing did increase.

And she was blessed by every tongue,

By stern and gentle, old and young.

Yea, even the children at their mother’s feet,

Are taught such homely rhyming to repeat.

In latter days from Brahma came,

To rule our land, a noble Dame.

Kind was her heart and bright her fame,

And Ahilya was her honored name.”
