Network traffic clogs connectivity; Fb, YouTube, Netflix bring down quality: Working from home? Switch to odd working time to get better connectivity
With the population of 1.37 billion people confined in their
homes, there has been a surge in the usage of broadband and telecom networks
resulting in increased air traffic and disruptions in connectivity.
To manage the use of networks streaming service Netflix and
social media platform Facebook have reduced the amount of data their services
use to ease congested telecoms networks in India, where millions are using home
internet amid a lockdown to contain the coronavirus outbreak.
Netflix is working on reducing traffic over Indian telecom
networks by 25% over the next 30 days, as per the official statement released
by the company.
Facebook also confirmed its decision to reduce the bitrate
for video streaming on its platform as well as Instagram for users in India. YouTube,
one of the most trending streaming giant, also followed the footsteps and is limiting
streaming quality to ensure that the internet bandwidth doesn’t go overload.
The changes are being brought following suggestions by the
Cellular Operator Association of India (COAI).
Still, the overload and network traffic does affect people
during peak hours of usage. The internet speed that people are able in India as
per Google speed test is ‘Very Slow’ but web browsing should work.
Though efforts are also being made by network tie-ups, the
upsurge in network usage is unbeatable.
Network Speed down to 2 Mbps
According to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India),
Madhya Pradesh gets 11.6 Mbps on Airtel network, 7.4 Mbps on Idea and 23.9 Mbps
on Jio. Hence, an average can be considered as 14.3 Mbps.
The speeds are coming down to 2 Mbps on an average.
How to manage Network Traffic during lockdown?
With the struggle being real for developers, project
managers, designers, and others working from home and in need of constant good
connections, technology experts offer some suggestions:
·
You can probably get more peace and better
connectivity by working during non-peak hours. For example, working at night,
early morning or lunch hours, you might be able to get access to better speed
and network access.
·
Check the devices in your home using the network.
From smart TV to gadgets, our homes are filled with devices silently using the
broadband network for downloading music, videos and other entertainments.
Switching them off while working can boost network speed for work.
·
Avoid working in multiple windows to keep your
network from hanging.
·
You can download videos instead of streaming to
avoid buffering and re-use of data for the same videos.
