Shaheed Devendra Soni: life of a fearless warrior, shared
by family members
Devendra always wanted to join Army since a tender age and
was a keen sportsman. He always said that Army is the best way to serve the
nation as it is corruption free. He was a motivation for every child in
Shahdol.
Devendra was recruited in Jabalpur recruitment rally of Army
held in 2010 at the age of 19. Since, then he was posted in Kashmir. Before his
posting at Gurez sector, Devendra was posted at Siachin and Kargil.
Devendra came to visit to visit his family twice every year.
That year, i.e. 2016, Devendra was supposed to visit the family in December but
couldn’t come due to the tense situation at LoC (line of control).
In December, since his leave was cancelled, he was supposed
to come on January 15. Devendra had informed his family that due to bad weather
it was not possible to leave the post.
On 25 January 2017, i.e., exactly 2 years back on the same,
a heavy snowfall hit army posts and trapped army men. Some of Devendra's
military colleagues were trapped in the snowfall.
10 soldiers including Devendra went up the hill to rescue
them. Devendra and his companions were half-way up when an avalanche hit
Kishanganga river that flows alongside of the Chanditap hill.
This is a steep hill standing at 80 degrees. It was not
possible to save the trapped soldiers without crossing the place of sledding,
so these 10 soldiers started to cross the path by making a distance in groups of
four. Suddenly, an icy storm hit the top of the hill and all the soldiers lost
their lives.
The four soldiers who were already trapped in the storm
could not be saved. Hence, in that fierce avalanche 14 soldiers were martyred including
Devendra.
Family of the soldier is settled in Shahdol. He has two
brothers and a sister. His father Vijay Soni works in Shahdol court while his
two elder brothers Dhirendra and Virendra works at SP office, Shahdol and post
office respectively.
