A forest rises where classrooms stand: SGSITS grows 8,175 trees in two years

Eight thousand one hundred seventy-five saplings planted two years ago now form a 15-foot-high forest inside the SGSITS campus in Indore. Within a functioning engineering campus, Shri G.S. Institute of Technology & Science has established a 43,000-square-foot dense forest using the Akira Miyawaki afforestation technique.

The institute planted the saplings in February 2024, when they measured just 8 to 12 inches. In two years, the trees recorded an average growth rate of nearly seven feet per year, eventually covering one acre of campus land. The project is divided into two segments — "Chandan Nikunj" and "Krishna Taruvan" — named in remembrance of individuals who played a key role in establishing the institute in 1952.

"A green reminder that we still belong to nature," said Director Neetesh Purohit. "Let us do something meaningful... let us witness a forest in the heart of the city."

Technical execution

The forest includes 65 plant species, including 25 endangered and threatened varieties. The team maintains the plantation through drip irrigation and manual weeding to ensure dense, multi-layered growth characteristic of the Miyawaki model. The project was conceptualized during the tenure of former director Saxena and executed by college media coordinator Alex Kutty and his team.

Public dedication

SGSITS will formally dedicate the forest to the public during a ceremony on February 13, 2026. The institute has invited citizens, environmental groups, and members of the media to attend. To regulate public visits, an online slot-booking system will soon be introduced to enable community access within campus limits.

Plant Species 65 (including 25 Endangered)
Growth Rate ~7 Feet Per Annum
