Building Bridges, Blending Flavours, Weaving Connections
TINA KHATRI
Welcome, young builders, chefs, and weavers of a brighter world.
Today is World Science Day for Peace and Development, a day that asks a beautiful question: What if our greatest challenges are just rivers waiting for a bridge? What if the tools we need to build a future of peace and health are not just in labs, but also in our hands, our kitchens, and our hearts?
Today, you are not just students. You are engineers designing a bridge of hope. You are chefs preparing a recipe for global friendship. You are artists weaving a tapestry of connection.
Let’s build bridges from paper, mix peace in bowls, and weave friendship from string—crafting a world where every fold, every flavour, every thread brings us closer together.
Paper Bridge Challenge
Goal: Build a bridge from 1 sheet of paper that can hold the most coins.
You Need:
- 1 sheet of paper (any kind)
- 2 books of the same size
- Coins (pennies work great)
The Steps:
- Set Up the Gap: Place the two books about 6 inches apart. This is your "river."
- Build Your Bridge: Using just your one sheet of paper, create a bridge that spans the gap between the books. You can fold, roll, or bend the paper, but you cannot use any tape or glue!
- Test for Strength: Gently place your paper bridge on the books. Slowly add coins, one at a time, to the centre of the bridge.
- The Challenge: How many coins can your bridge hold before it collapses? Try different paper shapes to see which one is the strongest!
Quick Design Ideas to Try:
- The Flat Bridge: Just lay the flat paper across the gap. How many coins does it hold?
- The Accordion Bridge: Fold the paper back and forth like a fan. This creates ridges that add strength!
- The Tube Bridge: Roll the paper tightly into a tube. See how strong a single cylinder can be.
Sushi in a bowl
Cook Rice:
1. Rinse 1 cup sushi rice
2. Cook with 1¼ cups water for 15 minutes
3. Mix 2 tbsp rice vinegar + 1 tbsp sugar + ½ tsp salt
4. Stir into cooked rice, then cool
Prep Toppings:
· Shred 1 carrot
· Chop ½ cucumber
· Cube 1 avocado
· Cut 1 nori sheet with scissors
· Measure ½ cup edamame
Assemble:
1. Put rice in bowls
2. Add toppings in sections
3. Sprinkle with sesame seeds
4. Drizzle with soy sauce
Friendship string art
You Need:
- Cardboard square
- Push pins
- Colourful yarn
- Scissors
- Pencil
3 Steps:
- DRAW & PIN
- Draw a simple shape (heart, star) on cardboard
- Push pins into the outline every 2 cm
- START WEAVING
- Tie yarn to one pin
- Stretch across shape to another pin
- Wrap and continue to different pins
- CREATE WEB
- Keep crossing shape randomly
- Change colors if you want
- Tie end when finished
Big Idea: Each string is like one friendship. Many connections make a strong, beautiful community - just like scientists working together!
