Indore Leads in Class 8, But Lags in Class 5: A Tale of Two Exams
Indore’s performance in the Class 5 and Class 8 board pattern exams reveals a mixed outcome, with the division securing positions that reflect both areas of strength and potential for improvement, as shown in the results released by the Madhya Pradesh School Education Department on Friday.
Indore’s performance in class 5
In the Class 5 exams, Indore achieved a pass percentage of 94.28%, ranking 4th among the 10 divisions of the state. This is above the state average of 92.70%, which represents a 2% increase over the previous year's result of 90.97%. While Indore’s pass rate is commendable, it is essential to note that several divisions, including Shahdol, Chambal, and Narmadapuram, recorded higher pass percentages, indicating that Indore's performance is not exceptional within the broader context of the state’s results.
Regarding the percentage of students achieving A+ and A grades, Indore recorded 19.87%. This places the division 5th in the state, which is below the state average of 21.47%. The performance in this category indicates that while a significant proportion of students in Indore are passing, the number of top performers is comparatively lower than in other regions such as Chambal and Jabalpur, which recorded higher percentages of A+ and A grade students.
Class 5 Pass Percentage:
Percentage of A+ and A Grade Students:
Indore’s performance in class 8
In Class 8, Indore achieved a pass percentage of 93.47%, the highest in the state, surpassing the state average of 90.02%. While this result is notable, it must be contextualized by the fact that the difference in pass percentages across divisions is relatively narrow. Indore’s performance, while ranking first, is closely followed by other divisions like Narmadapuram and Shahdol, which recorded pass percentages of 92.59% and 92.41%, respectively. The data suggests that while Indore leads in Class 8, the overall performance within the division is not markedly higher than its peers.
In terms of A+ and A grade students in Class 8, Indore’s 29.39% is above the state average of 29.60%, but this performance still ranks 5th among the 10 divisions. The percentage of high-achieving students in Indore is lower than in Chambal (38.40%) and Jabalpur (33.75%), which raises questions about the academic competitiveness in the division. Indore’s relatively lower percentage of top-grade students may reflect systemic challenges that need to be addressed to improve the quality of high-level academic achievement.
Class 8 Pass Percentage:
Rural students lag behind
The performance disparities between urban and rural students in Indore also warrant attention. While the overall pass percentage is relatively high, the regional breakdown reveals that rural areas still face significant educational challenges. The results show that while rural students are improving, their performance still lags behind urban students, a trend consistent across many divisions in the state.
Indore’s results in the 5th and 8th board exams are above the state average, they are not exceptional when compared to other divisions. The percentage of students achieving A+ and A grades remains lower than expected, and the rural-urban divide in academic performance indicates that there are areas requiring focused intervention. These results highlight the need for targeted educational strategies to address gaps in high achievement and to ensure that rural students receive the support they need to perform on par with their urban counterparts.
Large difference b/w govt & pvt schools
The data for the years 2021-2025 indicates a significant shift in the performance of students in Madhya Pradesh, particularly in Class 5 and Class 8. For Class 5, the pass percentage in government schools has seen a steady increase from 6.30% in 2021-22 to 12.54% in 2024-25, signaling gradual improvement. In contrast, the performance in private schools has been considerably higher, with a sharp rise from 18.58% in 2022-23 to 35.09% in 2024-25. This suggests a widening gap between government and private school students, highlighting disparities in the quality of education between the two sectors.
In Class 8, a similar trend is observed. Government school pass percentages have improved from 14.06% in 2021-22 to 19.02% in 2024-25, although they still lag behind private schools, where the pass percentage increased from 31.74% in 2022-23 to 48.49% in 2024-25. This disparity further accentuates the challenges faced by the government sector in bridging the educational gap. While both sectors show positive growth over the years, the substantial difference in pass rates suggests that urgent reforms are needed to enhance the quality of government schooling and ensure that students in government schools perform on par with their private school counterparts. These figures indicate an overall positive trend, but the state must address the existing inequality between government and private institutions to achieve balanced educational development.
