Did you know that science isn’t just about labs and textbooks? It’s a powerful tool that can help create a peaceful and sustainable world. This November 10, join us in celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development, a day dedicated to exploring how science can solve global challenges and promote a better future for everyone.
From creating a Science-Themed Peace Mural to exploring the fascinating science behind making your own ice cream, there's something for everyone!
You’ll also get to build a Solar Oven, using the sun’s energy to cook food.

Science-Themed Peace Mural
Materials Needed:
Large paper or canvas (enough for everyone to work on)
Paints, markers, or crayons
Brushes, sponges, or any painting tools
Pencils for sketching
Paper or magazines for reference images (optional)
Masking tape (to outline sections)
Rulers (optional for straight lines)
Inspirational quotes (optional)
Step 1: Brainstorm Ideas
Think about how science helps bring peace (e.g., clean water, space exploration, solar energy).
Choose symbols of peace (e.g., dove, Earth, hands holding hands).
Step 2: Plan Your Mural
Draw pictures of science and peace on a big paper or canvas.
Ideas: dove, solar panels, Earth with plants, people working together, space rockets.
If there are many of you, work in groups on different parts.
Step 3: Paint and Color
Use bright colors (markers, paint, or crayons).
Work together and share materials to finish faster.
Step 4: Add Peace Quotes (Optional)
Write short peace quotes like:
“Science for a peaceful world.”
“Together, we can solve problems.”
Step 5: Final Touches
Add any small details or missing colors.
Step 6: Display the Mural!
Hang up your mural for everyone to see and admire your teamwork!

Make Solar Oven
Materials Needed:
Pizza box (or any cardboard box)
Aluminum foil
Clear plastic wrap
Black construction paper
Scissors
Tape or glue
S'mores ingredients (chocolate, marshmallows, graham crackers)
Sunny spot

Steps:
Prepare the Box:
Cut a flap in the lid of the pizza box.
Fold the flap back.
Add Aluminum Foil:
Cover the inside of the flap with shiny aluminum foil.
Tape it down smoothly.
Line the Box:
Tape black construction paper on the bottom of the box to absorb heat.
Seal with Plastic Wrap:
Cover the opening with clear plastic wrap and tape it tightly.
Prepare Your Food:
Place your s'mores (marshmallow, chocolate, graham crackers) inside the box.
Angle the Flap:
Adjust the flap to reflect sunlight into the box.
Let the Sun Cook:
Leave the box outside in the sun for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Check to see if the chocolate and marshmallow are melted.

Make Your Own Ice Cream (Freezing Point Depression)
Materials:
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Ice
1/2 cup salt (rock salt or regular salt)
Ziploc bags (one large, one small)
Steps:
In the small Ziploc bag, combine heavy cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract. Seal the bag tightly.
In the large Ziploc bag, add ice and salt. Place the smaller bag inside the large one, ensuring the small bag is surrounded by ice.
Shake the bag for about 5–10 minutes until the ice cream forms. As the salt lowers the freezing point of the ice, the cream inside freezes into ice cream!
Remove the small bag, serve, and enjoy your homemade ice cream.
