CBSE tweaks English syllabus and includes more analytical section cutting off creative writing parts

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) needs students to have a stronger and more analytical approach towards English. The board tweaked the syllabus and added new analytical sections in Section C for students attempting Class 10 board.
The board has now informed schools across the country including Indore about inclusion of Reference to the Context (RTC) with one extract out of two from Drama / Prose; and one extract out of two from poetry.
This will be of 5 marks each and in all 10 marks.
“Context is everything. It is ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘when’, and ‘why’ of a situation or event,” explained Sangeeta Uppal, principal of The Millennium School, Indore. She added that RTC is important because it helps us make sense of things.
“Contextual analysis is the process of breaking down a complex issue or problem in order to better understand it,” UK Jha, principal of Choithram School North Campus, said.
In RTC sections, the questions can be based on literary terms, poetic devices, who said to whom, synonyms or antonyms and deep meaning of provided poetry lines or prose. Further, as the board announced Multiple Choice Questions / Objective Type Questions will be asked to assess inference, analysis, interpretation, evaluation and vocabulary.
Analytics over Creativity
Further, instead of writing a short story based on a given outline or cue/s in about 150-200 words, now students will be required to write an analytical paragraph.
They will be required to write the paragraph based on a given Map /Chart / Graph / Cue/s.
Further, they must answer one out of two questions is to be answered. Adding more of logical and analytical testing for students, CBSE has included case-based passage (with visual input- statistical data, chart etc.).
Lesser Grammar!
The good news for students is slashing down of three major topics in English grammar. Following topics have been eliminated in English grammar:
• Use of passive voice
• Clauses: Noun clauses, Adverb clauses, Relative clauses
• Preposition
