The questions continue to loam over as the results of Tiger Census 2022 fail to be announced on International Tiger Day, i.e. July 29, and even over the following weekend. Forest officials are now tipsy as the tiger census seems to be facing issues.
The reason for delays in tiger census as shared by spokespersons is fund delay and hence, hampering of camera installations. However, there are high hopes that tigers numbers have increased throughout the country and as per claims of MP Forest department, the number of tigers in the state is flourishing.
“MP has won the title of Leopard State and many other such, because the eco-system is flourishing and tigers are indicators of the same,” Rajnish Singh, APCCF, said.
However, tiger census results are in doldrums. This is causing anxiety and worry to animal activists and lovers of the state.
The reason for delay as shared by officials is fund allocation. As per sources, The Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change approved the project involving Tk35.94 crore on March 23 this year.
However, forest department officials said that no money has yet been allocated in the current fiscal year.
“Tigers are essential for our environment and we were expecting good news on Tiger day, but now, there is a fear taking over... have we really lost too many tigers?” Rahul D Takalkar, an infrastructure developer, who works close to tiger reserves in MP, said. He added that spotting of tigers is still common, but one can never be sure.
Furthermore, the worry behind tiger census magnifies as the Second Global Tiger Summit in Russia's Vladivostock, will be held on September 5, 2022.
On the flip side, one can expect that Tiger census will be completed and report will be provided by then. For the summit, an expert team has been constituted to draw up a draft plan for the National Tiger Recovery Programme 2022-2034. The team includes experts from all over the country including MP.
