Father's Day Special 2022: High involvement of fathers improves development of children and results in better cognitive growth.

High involvement of fathers improves development of children and results in better cognitive growth. This was shown in several researches including internationally recognised researches conducted by Fathima Bushra Saliha and Jayan C.
The research showed that children with highly involved fathers show a better cognitive ability than children with averagely or less involved fathers.
So, while we have been labelling the role of fathers as providers and protectors, their involvement in raising kids is equally important. Psychiatrists and educationists in Indore recognise this fact and urge parents to ensure the involvement of fathers in day-to-day activities with children as well.
“About a decade ago, the challenge was to involve fathers in raising kids, but now, it’s more complicated, as many families are now headed by single parents,” Sangeeta Uppal, an educationist said.
Her experience is supported by latest report from United Nation, which estimated that 7.5 percent of households in India are headed by single parents.
Furthermore, majority of households of single parents are headed by mothers. In fact, the majority is managed by single mothers. The rise is disturbing as the number of single parents doubled in the last two decades in India.
In numbers, there are approximately 13 million of all Indian households, which are run by single mothers.
Psychiatrists in Indore often quote the importance of healthy father-children relationships. On the other hand, lacking such a healthy relationship can cause an array of psychological issues and increased risk towards addictions.
Fatherless kids prone to Addictions
We often feel addiction is just substance abuse. However, a growing addiction in the world and especially in India is gaming addiction.
A psychiatrist specializing in rehabilitation from addictions Dr Pawan Rathi said, “There are several cases reported of fraud, theft, suicide and many issues serious issues because of gaming addiction now.”
He added that many parents bring forward their kids with severe gaming addictions now. “One of the major reasons why people are more prone to addictions including gaming, substance based and others is lack of father figure and involvement of father in raising children,” Dr Rathi said.
How can you increase Father’s involvement in Child’s life?
-shared by Dr Smita Agrawal, a psychiatrist
• Ensure family time on weekends and holidays, where everyone especially the father is able to spend some quality time with kids.
• It’s must that everyone eats together. A family that eats together, definitely bonds better.
• Each parent, mother and father, must demonstrate a mutual respect. Parents, who respect each other and demonstrate mutual respect to their children, provide a secure environment for them.
• Organise activities wherein father teams with children. Playing sports is one of the best ways to involve fathers in children’s life.
