NEP 2020 inclusive: Covid boosts digitalisation of schools: AR & VR coming soon
Curriculum on Digital Safety, online well-being, already up
Post covid-19 era, everything has seen a transformation post covid-19 era and digitalisation of education system has been rapid. Now, with the need of technology to evolve and provide international level of learning to Indian education, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) will be used now.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in collaboration with the tech giant, Meta, aims to train 10 lakh teachers and more than 1 crore students in the VR and AR in the next three years.
As part of this partnership, Meta has already provided a curriculum on Digital Safety, online well-being, VR and AR.
What is AR and VR?
Augmented Reality or AR is an interactive experience that involves overlaying computer-generated visuals in the real-time physical world. It superimposes digital content in the real-world environment captured through the live camera feed. This "digital content" could be anything, right from a hat and glass to jewellery and dresses.
Virtual reality is a computer-generated simulated 3D environment that can usually be explored in 360 degrees. It involves hardware like goggles that one has to wear. The person is then served a virtual world that they can view and interact with.
How will AR and VR be used in education?
“AR provides a big opportunity for immersive learning wherein students can visualise and learn. Even a student studying in class VI can visualise how an engine is assembled or how heart and brain function,” UK Jha, chairman of Indore Sahodaya Complex of CBSE schools, said.
He added that this is just opposite to rote learning. “Such a programme will create a big opportunity for the students community,” Jha said.

AR and VR to support NEP 2020
National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 emphasizes immersive, visual and experiential learning and this move will cut across the infrastructural challenges. If the students at an early age of schooling feel at home with these tech learning, it will also help big in further enhancing human infrastructure resource for India.
AR and VR to be a skill subject in CBSE
Biswajit Saha, director, CBSE, says, “AR and VR will be introduced as a skill subject for classes VI to VIII and it will be integrated into STEM education till class XII. The vision is to democratise and universalise STEM education. The students will get to learn the theory part and will also have projects and internships. We are also planning to have lab experiments to make learning more immersive and experiential.”
He added that in addition to this, students will also be encouraged to leverage AR and VR in entrepreneurship. Some of the topics that will be covered are; Digital Etiquettes, Well Being, Digital Citizenship, Digital Footprints, Cyber Safety and Security. “Students would also be given the knowledge to take care of passwords,” Saha said.
