Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar doesn’t receive the respect and recognition, she deserved. Stating this author Vikram Sampath said, “Nobody knows the story of Devi Ahilya, which should ideally be taught and re-told to the entire country.”
In the face-to-face interview with Free Press, the author shared his opinions and urged people to bring a revolution by providing equal recognition to all the royals in the country and not just Mughal rulers.
“The history taught in school text and even university is very partial doesn’t cover many important rulers,” Sampath said.
He cited that rulers like Devi Ahilya, Rani Abbakka Chowta and others are not even talked about enough. “Naming the college or airport after the queen is not enough,” Sampath said.
He suggested that the entire royals from history should be scrapped, especially if this is how we are teaching biased history to students. “It’s not religion but definitely a region biased history that we are teaching,” Sampath said.
He added the focus of entire history of India is centred to Delhi. “We need to revise, and teach the history of all the states,” Sampath said.
He added that the current history lacks overall integration and to ensure national integration, the syllabus should be revised.
Sampath further talked about women leading the recording industry. “Men stayed away from recording for a very long time, while women had accepted and recorded their voices,” he said.
Sampath mentioned Gauhar Jaan as the first woman to record her voice. “Jaanki Bai, Zohar Bai and Malika Jaan are a few more,” he said.
