Marking the birth of lord Kartikeya, Kartik Purnima was celebrated with fervour and religious sentiments by south Indian community in Indore. The community members gathered at lord Kartikeya temple in Vijay Nagar to celebrate the auspicious day on Sunday evening.
The temple glittered with earthen lamps and special decorations. The lord was adorned with various items to celebrate the birth.
Kartik Purnima is significant because many rituals and festivals culminate on the day. Also, it is said that the festivities of Kartika Purnima begin on the day of ‘Prabodhini Ekadashi’; ekadashi being the eleventh day and purnima being the fifteenth day of the Kartik month during Shukla Paksha, as shared by temple priest V Rajamani.
On the Kartik Purnima also known as Kartigai Deepam day, devotees made bonfires in front of Lord Kartikeya temple in the evening. “It is said that Lord Shiva burnt the chariots of several demons that were torturing sages and celestials. This bonfire symbolises this legend,” Rajamani said.
Devotees placed rows of earthen lamps in front of their houses in the evening and worshipped the Lord.
