Panda is derived from a Nepali word "ponya" which means bamboo-eating animal, and we have two sub-species of Red Panda in India, shared Avantika Adhruj in 11th International Red Panda Day celebration organised by city zoo and ARPF Indore.
The event was organised virtually through google meet, where the animal lover shared her research and study on Red Pandas. Avantika has been researching on Red Panda for almost a year.
“The Red Pandas which are known for its super cute features are the actual real Pandas as they were discovered even before the giant pandas,” Avantika said. She added that there are 2 sub-species of Red Panda, one species is found in Nepal, North East India, Bhutan and the other species are found in China and Myanmar.
“Red Panda is the state animal of Sikkim and is found in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Darjeeling in India,” Avantika said. She added that the cute species is found in cold weather.
The aim of the session was to bring Red Pandas into limelight and seeking public participation in controlling their poaching.
“Less than 10,000 red pandas are left in the wild,” Avantika said.
