‘With more IITs opening up, lack of professors and facilities is reducing the craze of studying in the institute. Considering our current progress and need of institutes, we are planning to open a school that would take up children from class sixth onwards and help them pursue a career in various fields.’
This was announced by 46-year-old teacher Anand Kumar, who is the inspiration for upcoming movie Super 30. He was in town for pre-release event of the movie at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya on Saturday. “The number of IITs is growing, but the interest among students is reducing towards the institutes because there are not enough professors and facilities at newly opened institutes,” Kumar said.
Following are excerpts from his interview:
Ques: Do you feel that language becomes an issue for students fluent in regional languages? Do you feel it is disadvantageous for students of even technical field that books are not available in regional languages?
Kumar: There is nothing feel bad about the essential need of studying English in our country today. I had come across a student named Shashi Dev, who spend time and learned English while studying at IIT Kharagpur. He went on to getting European scholarship, studying in France University and eventually even marrying a British woman. We have to learn English today in order to move ahead in life. We should feel privileged to know Hindi as well.
Ques: Do you think Indian education system is becoming unaffordable and good education is becoming limited to a certain class?
Kumar: The basic problem in Indian education system is the gap between government schools and a range of private schools. There is a section of people, who are going to schools, which resemble five star hotels. Another group of students do not get access to basic education. We need a uniform system that brings both the groups together.
Ques: Is this your first visit to Indore? Any experience or connect?
Kumar: I had come to Indore for the first time in 2009. It was again at the invitation of IMC corporator Deepak Jain. I am connected to the place knowing that it has people, who recognise talent even before it is highlighted. It was much before even the idea of the movie came up, when Jain had invited me and attempted to help students in Indore. Therefore, connect has always been there before it is a place that connected with me before the movie did.
Ques: When you came to Indore last time, you talked about opening Ramanujan University, what is your stand on it now?
Kumar: We (Jain and I) are planning to organise a free talent test for students of Madhya Pradesh. Talented students selected form the test will be taken ahead with the Super 30 program. The test will be conducted for class 10th pass-outs and class 12th pass-outs. The test will be organised in various districts of the state.
Ques: Why is it that many students fear mathematics and how can they counter it?
Kumar: The reason children are troubled with mathematics is because they are trying to learn it without understanding how and why of it. Students are learning formulae to solve a math problem. However, if they are taught on how the formulae is made, why is it made and how to connect it with real life, math fear would fly away forever. Mathematics works as motivator, because it gives exhilaration when we solve a difficult problem on our own. But the basic clarity and understanding is must for the same.
